STAUNTON — The 35th annual African-American Heritage & Multicultural Festival is happening this weekend, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday-Sunday Sept. 21-22 at Gypsy Hill Park bandstand in Staunton.
Founded in 1989, the festival is the longest-running celebration of its kind in western Virginia. The day’s celebration includes music and entertainment, ethnic foods, community organizations and arts, crafts and activities for children.
Groove to the music Saturday
- Noon Welcome ceremony includes Councilmember Alice Woods, elder Michael Simms, emcee A.J. Young and Angela Mickens
- 12:30 p.m. Drum For Fun Staunton — dance rhythms from West Africa
- 2 p.m. Pablo Perez and El Alcalde De La Salsa — Latin salsa band
- 4 p.m. Bak N Da Day — soul music from the ’50s and ’60s

- 10 a.m. Worship service with Rev. Dr. Edward Scott
- 1 p.m. J. Johnson & The Gospel Creators
- 2:30 p.m. Fashion show featuring traditional African fashions
- 3 p.m. Larnell Starkey & The Spiritual Seven
